This module explores the ethical, responsible, and lawful application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within academic environments. As the use of tools like ChatGPT, Copilot, Grammarly, and Midjourney grows, it is crucial for students to differentiate between constructive assistance and academic dishonesty. Understanding AI ethics is a vital aspect of digital literacy, which comprises four foundational elements: Digital Skills, Digital Safety, Digital Ethics, and Digital Culture (Kominfo, 2023).

Upon completing this module, students will be capable of:
• Describing the fundamental principles of digital and AI ethics.
• Recognizing ethical breaches in the academic application of AI tools.
• Implementing the principles of transparency, accountability, fairness, and privacy in academic practices.
• Cultivating reflective and responsible behaviors when utilizing AI technologies.
- Core Content
3.1 AI in Academia
Artificial intelligence can aid students in tasks like writing, translating, outlining, and creating visual materials. Nonetheless, a lack of ethical understanding regarding AI can result in:
•Digital plagiarism – replicating ideas without proper credit.
•Cognitive dependency – excessive reliance on AI resulting in diminished critical thinking.
•Bias and misinformation – flawed or altered data generated by AI.
•AI should function as a thinking aide, not as a replacement for independent thought.
3.2 Principles of Ethical AI Use
According to the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (2021), four fundamental ethical principles should guide students to use AI in a responsible manner:
•Transparency
Always reveal when AI tools have been utilized in your academic work. For instance: “Some parts of this report were created with the aid of ChatGPT, revised and verified by the author.”
•Accountability
Students retain complete responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of their work, regardless of AI involvement.
•Fairness
AI should never be employed to mislead, discriminate against, or manipulate research data. Ethical implementation ensures that technology fosters equity instead of perpetuating bias.
•Privacy
Do not upload personal information, unpublished research, or institutional data to public AI platforms like ChatGPT or image generators.
3.3 Academic Ethics and Legal Aspects
The ethical application of AI is also consistent with Indonesian law, which includes:
•Law No. 28 of 2014 concerning Copyright: Only works created by humans qualify for copyright protections.
•Law No. 27 of 2022 regarding Personal Data Protection (PDP): Prohibits the uploading or sharing of personal information without consent.
•Law No. 11 of 2008 on Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE): Articles 27 & 28 forbid misleading or immoral digital content.
Since AI is not recognized legally as an “author,” the individual using AI tools is fully accountable for all content generated.

The conduct breaches the principles of transparency and accountability. The student ought to have disclosed the use of AI and checked the reliability of the content produced. The ethical usage of AI does not ban technology; it governs how it is employed appropriately.

• Group Project: Create a digital poster titled “Think Before You Prompt – Ethics in AI Utilization.”
